What makes an Etsy tag work
Etsy tags are not hashtags and they are not keywords in the Google sense. They are thirteen chances to match a shopper's exact query, and the rules for using them well are narrow enough to write down.
- 1
Use all thirteen
Etsy gives every listing 13 tag slots and each one is a separate query you can appear in. Most listings use five or six. The unused slots are not neutral — they are searches your competitors turn up in and you don't.
- 2
Phrases, not single words
“Lamp” puts you behind two million listings. “Fringed boudoir lamp” puts you in front of a much smaller set of people who are much closer to buying. Multi-word tags are how a small shop gets found at all.
- 3
Don't repeat words across tags
“Vintage lamp”, “vintage lighting” and “vintage decor” spend three of your thirteen slots on the same word. Etsy already matches across your tags, so the repetition buys you nothing.
- 4
Twenty characters each, maximum
It's a hard cap. A tag that runs over is rejected rather than truncated, which is why long descriptive phrases have to be tightened rather than trimmed.
- 5
Match how buyers type, not how you'd catalogue
Nobody searches “occasional table, mahogany, Georgian revival”. They search “small side table wood”. Tags are a record of other people's vocabulary, not yours.
Why generate tags from the photo
A tag generator that starts from a title you typed can only rearrange the words you already thought of — which are, by definition, the ones you were going to use anyway. Starting from the photograph adds the vocabulary you didn't reach for: the shape of a leg, the finish on a shade, the era a silhouette belongs to.
The tradeoff is honesty. A photograph can show you a marble-look surface; it cannot tell you the stone is marble. Tags here are generated from what is visible, and claims that a photo can't settle — makers, dates, authenticity — are kept out of the title and description entirely rather than guessed at.
Common questions
- Is it really free? The first listing needs no account at all. A free account adds three more and then one a month, still with no card.
- Will Etsy penalise AI-written tags? No. Etsy's policies require that your listings are accurate and that you're the seller of record — not that you typed the words yourself. Accuracy is the part that matters, which is what the confidence labelling is for.
- Can I edit them? Yes, and you should. Nothing is posted automatically — you copy what you want and paste it into Etsy yourself.
- Does it work for handmade as well as vintage? Yes. The Etsy rules it follows are the same either way; the vocabulary it reaches for differs.
