Can you call it vintage on Etsy? The 20-year rule in plain terms

Etsy has one rule about the word vintage, and it is a number: an item must be at least 20 years old to be listed as vintage. Not vintage-looking, not vintage-inspired, not made in a vintage style. Twenty years old.

It sounds simple and it causes constant trouble, because the rule is about age while almost every seller's instinct is about appearance. Here is what it means in practice, and what to write when you genuinely don't know how old something is.

What the 20 years is measured from

The current year, on a rolling basis. In 2026 that means an item has to date to roughly 2006 or earlier. This moves — a piece that was too new to list as vintage three years ago may qualify now, which is worth remembering if you have dead stock sitting in a “can't list this” box.

What doesn't count, no matter how it looks

  • Reproductions and revivals. A Victorian-style washstand made in 2015 is not vintage. The style is Victorian; the object is eleven years old.
  • Distressed and “antiqued” new goods. Deliberate wear is a finish, not age.
  • Recently manufactured items in old packaging. The item's age is what counts.
  • Reworked pieces. If you've substantially remade an old item into something new, it has moved category — it is generally your handmade work using vintage materials, not a vintage item.

The phrase that gets sellers in trouble

“Vintage style” and “vintage-inspired” are legitimate descriptions of new goods — but putting them in a listing filed under the vintage category is a contradiction, and putting the bare word vintage in the title of a new item is a policy problem rather than a marketing choice.

The second version keeps every searchable term — farmhouse, vintage style, rustic, distressed — and stops claiming the object is old. It ranks for the same queries. It just isn't in the wrong category.

What to write when you don't know the age

This is the common case and the honest answer is not to pick a decade and hope. If you genuinely can't establish that something clears 20 years, you have three options, in order of preference:

  • Give the evidence and an estimated range. “Estimated 1960s–1980s, based on the moulded plastic switch and the cloth-covered flex”. You have stated a range, said it is an estimate, and shown your reasoning — which is also what you would show Etsy if asked.
  • Say what you know about its history. “Bought from a house clearance in Kent; the previous owner had it from new” is provenance you can actually attest to, which is different from provenance you inferred.
  • List it somewhere else. If you can't defend the 20 years, the category is wrong. A wrongly-categorised listing risks the item and sometimes the shop; a correctly-categorised one just sells.

Be ready for the question

Etsy may ask where your vintage items come from, how you source them, and who designed them. That is much easier to answer if you wrote the evidence down when you listed the piece rather than reconstructing it a year later. A one-line note in your own records — where it came from, what made you date it that way — costs nothing and settles the question if it's ever raised.

How this tool handles age

VitrineList never returns an exact year. Periods come back as ranges, they are never marked as observed, and an estimated period is barred from appearing as a stated fact in the title or description. If the styling suggests an era it will tell you so in the assessment panel, with the visual reason attached — and leave the decision about what to publish with you. More on how that works.

Note: this is a plain-language summary of Etsy's vintage policy as it stands, not legal advice, and Etsy's own policy pages are the authority. Check them before making a decision about a valuable listing.
